The Weekend

All right, first let's start off with the West Memphis Three, and Paradise Lost. Have you heard of the West Memphis Three? If you listen to a lot of music or music of certain varieties then I'm sure that you have. If you haven't then I suggest you rush to your local Video Store (not Blockbuster) and rent it on DVD.

It's basically the story of three boys convicted of brutally murdering three eight-year-old boys. The evidence against the convicted killers amounts to little more then the fact that they liked to wear black, listen to heavy metal music, and because one of them liked to take out books about Wicca.

When I watched this movie I was shocked, it was like watching a trial in the 1800's instead of Arkansas in 1994. There is a second movie as well Paradise Lost 2: Revelations which goes into detail about what happened after the trial.

Anyways, see the movie and visit the website, form your own opinions.

Second, and far less important, have you ever eaten a pomegranate? Up until yesterday I never had, did you know that you only eat the seeds of a pomegranate? I didn't, but you do. If you ever come across a pomegranate follow these easy instruction on how to eat it. Really you just eat the seeds.

Oh yeah, I bought "Meat is Murder" this weekend along with "Hollywood Town Hall" both old albums (don't listen to the release dates on the Rolling Stone site) but they were cheap, $10.00 and $7.00 respectively, so I'll leave you with the lyrics to Meat Is Murder, have a nice day:

Meat is Murder

Heifer whines could be human cries
Closer comes the screaming knife
This beautiful creature must die
This beautiful creature must die
A death for no reason
And death for no reason is murder

And the flesh you so fancifully fry
Is not succulent, tasty or kind
It’s death for no reason
And death for no reason is murder

And the calf that you carve with a smile
Is murder
And the turkey you festively slice
Is murder
Do you know how animals die ?

Kitchen aromas aren’t very homely
It’s not comforting, cheery or kind
It’s sizzling blood and the unholy stench
Of murder

It’s not natural, normal or kind
The flesh you so fancifully fry
The meat in your mouth
As you savour the flavour
Of murder

No, no, no, it’s murder
No, no, no, it’s murder
Oh ... and who hears when animals cry ?

The Decemberists

So last week, or was it two weeks ago? Ack my blogging has been slipping. Either way Rodney of Kingston took the train into town two Thursdays (Oct 13th) ago to go see The Decemberists at The Pheonix (which is apparently some dance club most of the time).

Now I hadn't actually heard of The Decemberists prior to the show, I'd heard of them, but never actually heard them. I agreed to go to the show cause it seemed like fun and the band has some significant buzz.

We caught the last two songs of the opening band, whose name I forget. They sounded alright, but were far to mellow for my appreciation that evening, had I known their stuff it might have been different.

After a few beers The Decemberists took the stage and put on a very good show. I would describe their music as jangly bedroom-pop (what?). After the show, which featured some instrument trading and some fan participation, we headed back to the apartment and a few drinks with Marge and Fiachra.

The next day Rod let me Rip the CD so that I could actually hear some of their stuff, since then I have been listening to it and Propagandhi almost exclusively. Needless to say I will be purchasing Picaresque the next time I venture into Sonic Boom.

Thanksgiving

Sorry guys I've really been dropping the ball lately with this here blog, my bad.

Anyhoo, thanksgiving, well as you can see from that earlier post of mine I was cooking thanksgiving dinner for the first time this year.

The menu was as follows:

1) Spicy Squash Soup
2) Mashed Potatoes
3) Roasted Winter Vegetables
4) Tofurkey
5) Apple Pie

I was incharge of the soup, the vegetables, and the tofurkey. Danielle was making the mashed potatoes and Marge was making the apple pie.

Everything turned out just great, except for the tofurkey which I burnt (but it still tasted alright). The evening was a lot of fun, it was cool to host our first thanksgiving and have our friends over to share it.

Here are some photos of the event:

Fulfilling the desires of my ancestors, pt 2.

So now I'm on this kick of making traditional Polish food, maybe it's because in this new city of mine I lack a Traditional Polish Babcia (TPB) or a mother who can cook these foods for me. To satisfy this kick this weekend I decided to make some pierogi.

I found a recipe online that seemed close to what my TPB and mother make, plus it allowed me to get rid of that cottage cheese that was just sitting in the fridge. The recipe said that it would only take me 40 minutes; things were looking up.

The first problem what I ran into was a lack of white flour in this hippie house, all we had was whole wheat, deciding that my ancestors probably lacked bleached flour to begin with I decided to forge ahead.

After that things went smoothly, although saying that this can be done in 40 minutes is a damn lie. The only stumbling block was when I ran out of dough, and had to resort to using wonton wrappers instead, sometimes living in a hippie house has it's advantages.

So about two hours later, my pierogi we already to be cooked. For those of you that do not know pierogi are first boiled in water, and then pan fried if desired. I like the just boiled kind so I was sticking with that this time.

One of the nice things about this "old style" of cooking is that no one really cares about how fattening anything is, if anything the more fattening something was the better. So after the pierogi are cooked how to you keep them from sticking together? The answer: liberally coat the cooked pierogi in melted butter...mmmmm mmmm.

Finally two and a half hours later my pierogi we all done, so Danielle and I tried them out. Personally I think that they were both great, but Danielle thinks that the whole-wheat flour makes the pierogi shell too tough, and so prefers the wonton pierogi.

Surprisingly the wonton pierogi are quite tasty, and if I were going to make pierogi again and really wanted to make them in 40 minutes, I'd probably just use wonton wrappers rather then making my own dough.

Note to self, purchase wonton wrappers for TPB.
