Shaving Shaving Shaving

Stumbled across this article today: How to get that perfect shave. An interesting peice if you are a man who shaves. I was pleased to note that I already follow most of the suggestions that the article makes:
  1. Shave after a hot shower - Check, well I mean I shave in the shower so I figure it counts
  2. Use a shaving brush - Check, been using one for years, works great.
  3. Use old fashioned shaving cream - Check
  4. Use a good non-disposable razor - Miss, I'm using the old Mach 3, but the article mentions using one of the old DE razors:

I think that I'm going to make one of them old fashioned type razors my next purchase. I am scared by the fact that the article warns you when you start shaving with that type of razor not to push down on the razor or you will cut yourself, and then goes one to say that most people that use modern razors push down to hard.

An interesting side note about this wet shaving idea is that it has been how I have been shaving for years (since !ahem! high school !ahem!) and I have never really suffered from razor burn or any of those other problems...unless I was in a rush and did a quick jobbie in the sink.

The only problem is the Badger haired brush...which isn't too cool, so try to find yourself a synthetic haired brush.

I have wanted to shave properly for quite some time but have never made the jump. Mostly because I am afraid to decapitate myself. What I found most interesting about the article was his preference for the double-edged razor (which always makes me think of the scene in Pink Floyd's "The Wall" where Bob Geldof shaves his face, looks in the mirror and then proceds to shave his chest and eyebrows, then the scene cuts and we see him all freaky looking with blood pouring out of his nipples) rather than the straight-razor. Perhaps he is just saying that for the guy using bics the DE is a good intro to real shaving. If I make the jump, however, I think I would go for the straightrazor (although I must admit that I haven't ever given much thought to the DE). According to an article in New Artist Collective Magazine the key to a great shave is (not too different from the MSNBC one): a)a straight razor with strop & badger hair brush b)leave lather for two to three minutes to let chemicals take effect c)shave with the grain d) cold ending to close pours e) shaving lotion to end it. They suggest that you go to an old fashioned barbershop and get a real shave, paying attention to what the barber does. I seem to recall from a listing in Toronto Life that there is a place in the Scotia Tower that is the best place in Toronto for a shave (all the CEO power broker types go there). Might be worth checking out.

Rod: Yeah the old fashioned shaving is pretty neat, but the fear of cutting myself with the razor is very real for me.

I've been meaning to mention this to my father, since he's been through both and is the reason that I do use a brush. But he also uses the Gell and stuff like that so I wonder what he thinks...is it work the extra effort?

Jay: Bully! I wasn't shaving much in high school, but I was shaving...hence the ahem!
