And now for something completely different, or more of the same

Some of you might know that I am a fan of mashups, well for the most part I'm a fan of The Grey Album.

As mashups gain in popularity it seems that more and more are being made, most I don't pay too much attention to, but this one made me stop and take notice. It's Q-Unit, a mashup of 50-cent and Queen, who could resist?

Came by this via Boing Boing.

Oh, Mark do you have a copy of the Grey Album? I've been trying to find one for a while...and now that I have no internet access at home, my search is not going very well.

the grey album was amazing- it took two lousy albums and made something great. q-unit is a combination of the most worthless band in world history(queen) and mashed in 50 cent (ugh) to create something that is total and absolute crap. no flow, not a decent song on the whole thing. just horrible. people who do mashups either have to do something good or they are just as useless as diddy remixes in honour of biggie. remixes and mashups are lame, but that being said, the grey album is one of the best albums of any type in this millenium so far. and for all you out there- i invented the remix (i have as much right to state that as sean)

Mark, you said "who could resist" and actually...well, I could. I saw a link posted on one of the music blogs I read and I thought....pass.

Is it any good? Honestly? seeing that comment above doesn't make me want to jump on it.

grey album as best of the millenium, eh? pretty strong words. I need to give it a second chance perhaps - i have only really given it a cursory listen.

I think the idea of the mashup is extremely interesting - kinda my opinion when i first encountered sampling: aural collage.

i need originality!... screw sampling, mixes, mashups, a majority of covers (read: Avril's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" & The White Stripe's version of Tegan and Sara's "Walking with the Ghost - Blechhh), and P. Diddy all together.
Musicians should be working on their own shit... any 10 year old with a computer can do your mish-mash-music stuff!
Has anyone heard the new NickleBack? "Take a look at this photograph..."
Oh man

I am a fan of covers, remixes, and, indeed, mashups - IF - as Dylan points out, they don't suck, which many do. I guess what I have to say is if you are going to do it, do it well. All a matter of taste, I suppose.

Now, I am not the guy to run to the defence of mashups etc., but I will say that I love a cover that is an interesting take on the original. They suck if they are a note-by-note transcription of the original author's work - what's the point? - but there are a lot of really good covers out there. Some are better than the originals.

Well, claire yes I do have a copy and you can borrow it if you need.

Dylan, why you gotta be a Queen hater? Quen put out a lot of good tunes. 50 cent, well I'm not really a fan of his stuff. But a few songs on this mashup are pretty good. (i.e. Crazy Little Pimp Called Love and Under Pressure all the time). The Grey Album is great...

Rod - Ahh give it a try, you might just like the Q-Unit, but then again you might not.

Jimmy - While I agree with you in part, my opinions on covers and things like mashups have softened in recent years (like so much of me) and for the most part a well done cover or mashup is just a good song to me.

the grey album isn't THE best album since 2000, but one of the best. a few record critics have taken this stance, too. it's like anything in music- it's hit or miss, and some people hate hit and some people love miss. but good is good. the white album not good. the black album not good. grey album very good.

and i totally agree with jimmy, but past the points of just covers. if you don't have a sound of your own, enjoy the fifteen minutes. but if you have a sound of your own, even if you suck (pink floyd, rush, ozzy, sex pistols) you can have a heck of a long career ahead of you.

and mark, queen totally sucks ass.

Lest we forget the high wave the Gunners rode on the coat-tails of others.
Live and Let Die
Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Mama Kin
Hair of the Dog
Sympathy for the Devil
to name a few...

Apparently the Hip did Black Day in July.... I heard it on the radio today.
And don't get me wrong... covers can be really good (Ben Harper's version of PJ's Indifference comes to mind) but ya, make it your own.
