Fulfilling the desires of my ancestors one by one

Just a quick post this morning to let all of you know that last night I did something that was foretold by my ancestors many many moons ago: I made cabbage rolls. Granted I doubt that my ancestors foretold gołąbki with tofu and a dash of soya sauce, but the experiment is still valid.

The only crappy part about the experience was the baking of the rolls. Seems the our oven might be on the fritz a little bit, as the bottom element did not turn on for the first hour, which meant that the liquid didn't boil, which meant that the brown rice didn't cook.

But after cooking for a few more hours the bottom element began to work, the liquid began to boil, and the little pigeons began to arrive, one by one.

You don't say how they taste - were they edible, with the tofu and other hippy stuff and the broken oven? I assume they turned out alright since you didn't say otherwise but just wonder..especially 'cause (and I don't mean to be offensive) from the photo those look really gross. It is just the tomato/cheese mixture (or whatever it is) I guess but from the pic it looks nasty. Not very photogenic, those, but in person I have no doubt that they were much more handsome.

When I made that post I actually hadn't tasted the finished product yet.

They are totally edible, and pretty tasty, but definately not photogenic. My mom's look better but still not that pretty, which is why I figure it takes most kids exposed to them a while to start liking them.

The nice thing is that they are heathly and tasty, cabbage often being referred to as "the perfect vegetable".

Is there a lot (and?) of cabbage in a cabbage roll? Here i am totally showing my anglo-saxon ignorance but I seem to recall the cabbage part just being the outside bit that no one ate. Maybe it is just me who doesn't eat the outside bit.

Reading that makes me sound really dumb. Oh well I am going to hit "publish" anyway and go home and look at a cookbook.

Glad to hear they turned out well despite the fact that they ain't purdy.

Yeah, you do eat the cabbage parts, it's like the wrapper on a spring roll or whatever.

Some cabbage rolls do have more cabbage then mine becuase the recipie calls for the leaves that are too small to be shredded up and added to the content.

But it all depends.
